Provenance

Where it came from

Feral Prowler was originally released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Amonkhet, the card reflects the bleak, trial-based culture of the world where inhabitants faced constant threats from lethal desert predators. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's graveyard-focused synergies, allowing players to draw a card at the cost of its own life, emphasizing the resource-heavy nature of the game’s combat.

The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. Velinov captured the Prowler as a lean, aggressive creature consistent with the aesthetic of Amonkhet’s mummified and cursed fauna. When it later appeared in The List—a curated selection of past cards occasionally inserted into modern booster packs—it served as a functional utility creature for players drafting or playing in eternal formats, rather than a high-value collector's piece.
