Provenance

Where it came from

Forced Worship was released in May 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set, the final installment of the Scars of Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set depicted the total victory of the mechanical, biomechanical Phyrexians over the native inhabitants of the metal world of Mirrodin, and the card's mechanics reflect this theme of subjugation by pacifying an opposing creature through a perpetual, taxing toll.

The card features art by Igor Kieryluk, who was commissioned to capture the chilling aesthetic of Phyrexian assimilation. His design emphasizes the surreal, body-horror elements inherent to the faction's influence, using a stark visual language to communicate the card's function as a permanent enchantment that binds a creature to the will of the Phyrexians. It remains a notable example of the set's commitment to portraying a dark, dystopian victory within the game's lore.
