Goblin Grenadiers

Goblin Grenadiers first appeared in the Urza's Destiny expansion released in 1999. The card was designed to embody the chaotic and self-destructive nature of goblin tribal themes common to the set, requiring the player to sacrifice two goblins to deal damage to a target creature or player. This aggressive sacrifice mechanic was representative of the 'Red' color philosophy in Magic: The Gathering during the late nineties, focusing on high-risk, high-reward plays.

The original illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, who contributed a gritty, detailed aesthetic that aligned with the dark fantasy tone of the period. In 2020, Wizards of the Coast introduced The List as a recurring feature in Set Boosters, acting as a curated repository of past cards. The inclusion of Goblin Grenadiers in The List serves as a nod to the game's long-running history, allowing newer players to encounter older designs preserved with their original collector numbers and formatting.
