Provenance

Where it came from

Hatchet Bully was released in 2008 as part of the Eventide expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Eventide served as the second half of the Shadowmoor block, a period characterized by a darker, more volatile interpretation of the game's fantasy setting, where a mystical event caused the world to descend into a perpetual state of twilight.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who captured the aggressive, opportunistic nature of the creature to fit the set's theme of conflict and survival. It was designed to emphasize the mechanics of red and black mana, rewarding players for aggressive playstyles. Upon its release, it was regarded as a standard utility creature within its limited environment, valued for its ability to grow stronger through the game's keyword mechanics.
