Provenance

Where it came from

The Hippo token was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to support specific card mechanics within the set, primarily serving as a creature token generated by the rare enchantment Phelddagrif-inspired card, though in this context, it appears as a distinct mechanical entity associated with the set's desert-themed aesthetic and the trial-based lore of the plane of Amonkhet.

The artwork for this token was provided by illustration artist Jesper Ejsing. Known for his atmospheric and fantasy-driven style, Ejsing sought to translate the classic, often whimsical Magic: The Gathering concept of a Hippo into the harsh, sun-drenched environment of the Amonkhet plane. The design emphasizes a stylized, sturdy creature that fits the tactical requirements of the game's creature token system while maintaining the visual consistency of the set's legendary desert architecture.
