What it does

When this creature enters, return a red or green creature you control to its owner's hand.

"That didn't happen naturally," said Multani. "Rath's overlay is interfering with the Æther itself."

Provenance

Where it came from

The Horned Kavu was released in the 2001 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Planeshift, the second set in the Invasion block. Designed to reflect the harsh, evolving landscape of the plane of Dominaria, the card highlights the Kavu, a species of predatory beast engineered for warfare. Mechanically, the card was designed to encourage synergy by allowing players to return a creature to their hand, offering a tactical advantage for replaying creatures with beneficial 'enters the battlefield' effects.

The illustration for Horned Kavu was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the aesthetic of the Invasion block. Critchlow depicted the creature with a focus on its rugged physiology and defensive horns, grounding it within the red-green color identity of the set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in Limited formats, serving as a functional staple for decks that sought to balance early-game aggression with long-term utility.
