Where it came from
Released as card number 65 in the 1991 Star Trek 25th Anniversary trading card set by Impel Marketing, this item highlights the iconic humpback whales from the 1986 film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The card captures a cinematic moment from the production, which was notable for its shift toward environmental themes and contemporary Earth settings, marking a distinct departure from the franchise's typical space-faring narratives.
The 1991 Impel series was designed to provide a comprehensive retrospective of the first twenty-five years of the Star Trek universe, including the original series and the first several feature films. The card features a film still on the front with descriptive text on the reverse, intended to educate fans on the plot relevance of the whales—George and Gracie—in the context of the film's mission to save the future through the preservation of an endangered species.
