Lashwrithe

Lashwrithe was introduced in the 2011 Magic: The Gathering set New Phyrexia, a release that depicted the final, brutal transformation of the plane of Mirrodin under the influence of the metallic Phyrexians. As a Living Weapon artifact, the card was designed to mechanically represent the parasitic nature of Phyrexian technology, which physically binds to a host creature upon entering the battlefield. The design team sought to capture the high-risk, high-reward flavor of Phyrexian mana mechanics, allowing players to pay life to bring the equipment into play already attached to a germ token.

The card’s striking visual identity was crafted by artist Whit Brachna, who emphasized the biomechanical aesthetic that defines the set. By depicting a twisted, bladed construct emerging from a pool of glistening oil, the illustration captures the terrifying fusion of flesh and machine central to the Phyrexian lore. Upon release, Lashwrithe was noted for its utility in black-aligned aggressive decks, where its power scaling—based on the number of Swamps the player controls—offered a persistent and formidable threat that remained relevant throughout the late stages of a game.
