Provenance

Where it came from

Last Chance was released as part of the initial Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion in 1999, which served as the international debut for the franchise outside of Japan. Developed by Media Factory and Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to introduce the mechanics of the game to Western players while mirroring the aesthetic and success of the original Japanese Base Set. The card itself, a trainer card within the set, features a standard design consistent with early TCG graphic standards, focusing on functional gameplay mechanics rather than ornate illustration.

The card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, whose work defined the early visual language of the Pokémon brand. Sugimori sought to maintain a cohesive, clean look that remained faithful to the sprites and character designs of the video games. While it is a common card in the Starter 1999 collection, it serves as a piece of the foundational era of the TCG, documenting the transition of the hobby from a regional Japanese phenomenon to a global cultural staple.
