Where it came from
The Malfunctioning Holodeck card, numbered 571 in the Star Trek CCG catalog, was released during the early era of the Decipher collectible card game. Designed to mirror the frequent plot complications of the Star Trek: The Next Generation television series, the card functions as a gameplay obstacle that forces players to navigate the unpredictable technical failures characteristic of the USS Enterprise-D's holographic systems.
The design team at Decipher sought to translate the tension of episodic malfunctions into mechanical card play, often utilizing stills from the show to capture the atmosphere of a failing simulation. The card was well-received among players for adding a layer of narrative flavor to the game, grounding the competitive mechanics in the established lore of the television franchise.
