Mana Echoes

Mana Echoes was first introduced in the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2002. Designed as a rare enchantment, the card was conceived during a period when the game was heavily focused on tribal synergies, specifically rewarding players for building decks around a single creature type. The intent behind its design was to create a high-risk, high-reward engine that could generate immense amounts of colorless mana, provided the player could consistently deploy creatures sharing the same type.

The card’s striking artwork, which depicts a glowing, crystalline surge of energy, was illustrated by Glen Angus. Angus was a prolific contributor to the game during the early 2000s, known for his ability to blend organic and ethereal elements into his card art. Upon release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche combo piece for casual play. Over time, however, it gained significant notoriety within the Commander format, where its ability to scale with tribal strategies made it a sought-after staple for players looking to execute explosive turns.
