Mind Bend was originally released in the 1996 Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set themed around the plane of Jamuraa and centered on mechanics like phasing and flanking. Designed by a team led by Bill Rose, the set aimed to introduce more complex strategic interactions to the game, with Mind Bend serving as a blue utility spell that allowed players to alter the color words on existing cards.
