Where it came from
My Wish Is Your Command was released in 2010 as part of the Archenemy set, a specialized multiplayer expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card functions as a 'scheme,' a unique card type designed to be used in the Archenemy format where one player faces a team of opponents. The set was created to emulate the feeling of battling a powerful boss character in a tabletop environment, using these oversized cards to provide the archenemy with game-altering advantages at the start of each turn.
The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose dark, evocative style helped establish the high-stakes, villainous atmosphere of the Archenemy product. The design philosophy behind this specific scheme, and the set as a whole, focused on balancing the immense power disparity between the solo player and the team, using flavor-heavy mechanics to make the archenemy feel like an unstoppable force during casual play sessions.
