Provenance

Where it came from

Numot, the Devastator was originally released in the 2006 set Planar Chaos as part of the Dragon cycle representing the wedge color combinations. The oversized version included in the 2011 Commander product line was designed to serve as a high-visibility centerpiece for the dedicated Commander format, which had recently transitioned from a fan-run project to an official Wizards of the Coast supported pillar of Magic: The Gathering. These oversized cards were produced specifically to track the position of a player's Commander in the command zone during games.

The artwork was created by Dan Dos Santos, who utilized a vivid, dynamic style to capture the essence of Numot, a legendary red, white, and blue dragon known for its ability to devastate lands. Dos Santos intended to emphasize the dragon's imposing stature and elemental affinity through sharp lighting and intricate scales. Upon release, the card became a staple for players building decks around the Boros-plus-Blue color identity, and the oversized printings were well-received by the community for their aesthetic appeal as display pieces.
