Where it came from
Oko, Thief of Crowns was originally released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion Throne of Eldraine. The card quickly gained infamy within the game's competitive community for its aggressive power level and its ability to neutralize threats by turning them into harmless creatures, a design choice that led to it being banned across multiple major constructed formats.
The 'Breaking News' variant, identified as collector number 77, was released as part of the 2024 Outlaws of Thunder Junction set. This special subset features a distinct visual style inspired by classic tabloid newspaper headlines and pulp crime fiction, reimagining existing powerful planeswalkers in an aesthetic that celebrates the set’s thematic focus on Western-inspired outlaws and high-stakes heists.
