Where it came from
Oran-Rief, the Vastwood was originally introduced in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering expansion Zendikar, designed to evoke the set's theme of a perilous, adventure-filled wilderness. The card functions as a legendary land that provides utility for green creatures, reflecting the flavor of the Vastwood as a place of immense growth and raw elemental power. This specific iteration appears in the 2017 Commander Anthology, a curated collection designed to provide players with accessible versions of popular cards from previous multiplayer-focused releases.
The art for Oran-Rief was created by artist Cam Kendall. The visual design emphasizes the towering, monolithic nature of the trees within the Vastwood, utilizing a vibrant green palette to convey the setting's untamed vitality. Upon its initial release, the card was well-received by players focusing on green-based creature decks, as its ability to place +1/+1 counters provided a consistent late-game advantage. Its inclusion in the Commander Anthology ensured its continued availability for fans of the Commander format, maintaining its status as a staple utility land.
