Private Research was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny expansion, the final set in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this expansion concluded a narrative arc centered on the artificer Urza and his multiversal machinations. The set was designed to introduce high-complexity mechanics and powerful enchantments, aiming to deepen the strategic depth of the game during a period of significant growth for the trading card medium.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Terese Nielsen, who was a prominent contributor to the game during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
