Provenance

Where it came from

Pulsemage Advocate was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion, the third and final set in the Odyssey block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. During this era, the game design focused heavily on the mechanics of the graveyard, and this card was created to provide a unique utility effect by allowing players to return cards from an opponent's graveyard to their hand in exchange for bringing creatures back from their own. It emerged during a time when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with more interactive, politically-oriented card mechanics that rewarded diplomacy in multiplayer formats.

The artwork was commissioned from Jeff Easley, a prominent illustrator known for his extensive contributions to Dungeons and Dragons sourcebooks throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Easley utilized his signature painterly style to depict the wizardly figure, aiming to evoke a sense of ancient, arcane wisdom consistent with the fantasy aesthetic of the Judgment set. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but intriguing tool for white-aligned control decks, valued primarily for its ability to manipulate graveyard resources in long-form games.
