Provenance

Where it came from

Pyrohemia was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique for its alternative-reality theme, which explored what might have happened if the color pie had shifted, resulting in effects typically seen in one color appearing in another. Pyrohemia is a direct color-shifted homage to the classic card Pestilence, moving the mechanics from black to red to better reflect red’s affinity for direct damage and fire-based destruction.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the chaotic and indiscriminate nature of the spell. The imagery depicts a surge of elemental fire, aligning with the set's aesthetic of raw, volatile power. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in multiplayer formats, where its ability to deal damage to all creatures and players simultaneously makes it a potent board-control tool.
