Provenance

Where it came from

The Rakdos Drake was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Iconic Masters, released in 2017. As a common creature card, it was designed to bolster the red-black color pair's aggressive themes within the set's limited draft environment. The creature represents the chaotic and destructive nature of the Rakdos Cult, a guild from the Ravnica plane known for its penchant for spectacles of violence and dark entertainment.

The card's illustration was crafted by artist Volkan Baga, who utilized a bold, predatory aesthetic to capture the essence of the creature's swift and hazardous nature. When it was later included in The List—a rotating selection of cards from throughout Magic's history inserted into Set Boosters—it served as a nod to the game's expansive mechanical legacy, offering newer players a glimpse into the creature-heavy design philosophy that defined the Iconic Masters draft experience.
