Provenance

Where it came from

The Salt Vampire, known formally as the M-113 creature, debuted in the 1966 Star Trek: The Original Series episode The Man Trap. As the first monster encountered by the crew of the Enterprise, it was designed by Wah Chang, a master prop maker and sculptor who created many of the iconic artifacts for the series. Chang intended for the creature to evoke a sense of tragic desperation rather than mere malice, using a rubber-latex suit that allowed for expressive movement despite the limitations of mid-sixties television effects.

The Star Trek Art Series trading cards serve as a curated retrospective of these foundational designs, showcasing original production sketches, publicity stills, and concept art. Card number 28 captures the creature's eerie aesthetic, highlighting its role as a seminal piece of science fiction creature design. These cards are widely collected today as a tribute to the craftsmanship of early television production, preserved in a format that emphasizes the artistic evolution of the Star Trek universe.
