Where it came from
The Saruman of Many Colors Art Series card was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth' set in 2023. These cards were specifically produced as collectible art pieces, featuring the vibrant, illustrative interpretation of the character Saruman found on the standard set card, but presented without the gameplay text to emphasize the visual artistry.
The illustration was created by artist Donato Giancola, a celebrated painter in the fantasy genre known for his classical approach to Tolkien’s legendarium. Giancola intended to capture the character's transition from a figure of wisdom to one of shifting, corruptive power, utilizing a rich palette that reflects Saruman’s own title as a wizard of many colors. The piece has been widely praised within the community for its textural depth and adherence to the literary description of the character.
