Scathe Zombies

Scathe Zombies first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the foundational design philosophy of black-aligned creatures during the game’s early years. The card was created to serve as a standard vanilla creature, providing a straightforward, cost-efficient threat that embodied the quintessential necromantic themes established by Wizards of the Coast. The version from Classic Sixth Edition, released in 1999, features illustration by Quinton Hoover. Known for his distinctive, painterly style that often utilized vibrant colors and dramatic poses, Hoover’s depiction of the creature captures the gritty, gothic aesthetic of the game’s formative era.
