Where it came from
Serra's Emissary was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a high-mana cost creature, it reflects the set's focus on introducing powerful, complex cards directly into Modern and Eternal formats. The card is intended to serve as a formidable top-end threat, utilizing protection mechanics to shield both the player and their permanents from various types of interaction.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Jason A. Engle, who captures the ethereal and authoritative nature of the Emissary. The design leans into the visual language of the Church of Serra, emphasizing divine iconography and scale. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players in Commander and cube environments for its versatility and its ability to act as a defensive stabilizer in aggressive matchups.
