Provenance

Where it came from

Sleight of Hand was originally introduced in the 1997 Portal set, designed as an introductory product to simplify the complex mechanics of Magic: The Gathering for new players. By the time it was reprinted as a common in the 2005 Ninth Edition core set, it had already established itself as a staple of blue-aligned deck building. The design focus was on efficient deck filtering, allowing players to exchange a card in hand for one of the top two cards of their library at a minimal mana cost.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by artist Jim Murray, who contributed a clean, digital aesthetic that fit the refined visual standards of the mid-2000s core sets. Murray’s portrayal captures the essence of the sorcery’s utility, favoring a focused, magical visual narrative that avoids the cluttered background elements found in earlier card versions. Upon release, the Ninth Edition printing was well-regarded for its accessibility and replaced the older, more complex artwork with a version that felt both modern and evergreen.
