Provenance

Where it came from

The Spectral Sliver was originally printed as part of the Legions set, released in 2003 as the second expansion of the Onslaught block. This set was unique in Magic: The Gathering history for being composed entirely of creature cards, a design choice meant to emphasize the tribal themes that defined the era. The Spectral Sliver served as a key piece of the Slivers, a fan-favorite species known for their hive-mind mechanics that grant shared abilities to all creatures of their type on the battlefield.

The artwork for this card was commissioned from Pete Venters, a prolific illustrator who defined much of the game’s aesthetic in its early years. Venters designed the Spectral Sliver with the spindly, otherworldly anatomy characteristic of the creature type, utilizing a ghostly palette to reflect its thematic connection to the graveyard. The card was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs, which serves to introduce classic designs like this one to new generations of players.
