Provenance

Where it came from

The Synapse Sliver was released in 2003 as part of the Legions set, the second expansion in the Onslaught block of Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique for being the first to consist entirely of creature cards, a design choice meant to shift the game's momentum toward aggressive, board-heavy play styles. The Sliver creature type had been introduced years prior in the Tempest block, and in Legions, the developers sought to expand the hive-mind mechanic by granting card-drawing abilities to the entire collective.

The card's striking illustration was provided by Thomas M. Baxa, a prolific fantasy artist known for his grotesque and visceral character designs. Baxa leaned into the theme of neural enhancement, depicting the creature with an exposed, pulsating brain structure to reflect its mechanical role as the engine of card advantage within a Sliver deck. Upon its release, the card became a staple for casual players interested in tribal synergies, eventually influencing the design of subsequent Sliver creatures in later modern-era sets.
