Where it came from
The Infamous Cruelclaw is a card featured in the Bloomburrow set for Magic: The Gathering, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024. Designed within the context of a whimsical, anthropomorphic woodland world, the card was produced as part of the set's promotional offerings to highlight the set's distinct 'Red-Black' archetype, which focuses on chaotic, high-stakes resource management and aggressive creature-based combat.
The visual design of the card leans into the idyllic but dangerous aesthetic of the Bloomburrow setting, contrasting cute creature silhouettes with the predatory nature of a badger. Illustrators for the set were tasked with creating a grounded, illustrative style that felt reminiscent of classic storybooks, a direction that was well-received by fans who appreciated the thematic cohesion between the card's mechanics and its cozy, folkloric art style.
