Where it came from
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, rendered as card number 371 in the Marvel Super Heroes trading card series, highlights the character Doreen Green, who first debuted in Marvel Super-Heroes #8 in 1991. Created by Will Murray and Steve Ditko, the character was initially conceived as a lighthearted subversion of traditional superhero tropes. Over time, she evolved from a niche curiosity into a fan-favorite figure, celebrated for her optimistic outlook and her ability to defeat formidable cosmic threats using an unconventional array of squirrel-themed powers.
The design of this specific trading card reflects the era's aesthetic, emphasizing bold colors and dynamic poses common to 1990s comic-related merchandise. It was produced to capitalize on the growing collector market for Marvel properties, positioning Squirrel Girl alongside established icons. While the character was once considered obscure, the card serves as a historical marker for her transition from a quirky one-off creation to a central figure within the broader Marvel canon, reflecting the brand’s willingness to experiment with humorous and unconventional character designs.
