What it does

Whenever this creature blocks or becomes blocked by a non-Wall creature, destroy that creature at end of combat.

Moss-covered statues littered the area, a macabre monument to the Basilisk's power.

Provenance

Where it came from

Thicket Basilisk was originally released in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets, the foundational releases of Magic: The Gathering created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. As a creature card from the earliest days of the game, it reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic and experimental mechanical design of the era, where the card’s ability to destroy any creature it blocks served to emphasize the dangerous, predatory nature of the basilisk in traditional folklore.

The artwork for this card was provided by Dan Frazier, one of the iconic original illustrators who helped define the visual language of early Magic. His watercolor-inspired style, characterized by textured backgrounds and a grounded, slightly surreal interpretation of mythological beasts, became a hallmark of the Beta set. At the time of its release, the card was received as a solid utility creature, though it is now primarily prized by collectors for its status as a piece of trading card history from the game's inception.
