Whipstitched Zombie

Whipstitched Zombie was released in 1999 as part of the Prophecy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed during a period of experimentation for Wizards of the Coast, intended to balance the gameplay mechanics of the preceding Urza's block, which had been criticized for being overly powerful. The expansion utilized a 'pitch' mechanic that allowed players to cast spells by discarding cards of a matching color, a thematic nod to the set's narrative of encroaching darkness and sacrifice.

The card's art was created by Daren Bader, a prolific contributor to the game during the late 1990s. His illustration captures the macabre and unsettling aesthetic of the game's black-aligned creatures, emphasizing the physical theme of the zombie being stitched together.
