Where it came from
The 'With Great Power . . .' card was released as part of the 2022 Secret Lair Countdown Kit, a limited-edition advent calendar-style product from Wizards of the Coast. Designed to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering, the set featured a variety of iconic cards reprinted with unique, stylized artwork. This particular entry, number 60, serves as a thematic tribute to the ethos of heroics and responsibility often associated with classic fantasy archetypes.
The illustration for this card was commissioned to evoke a sense of weight and purpose, moving away from standard fantasy tropes toward a more dramatic, minimalist aesthetic. By featuring distinct visual motifs that deviate from the card's original printing, the artists aimed to create a collectible piece that bridges the gap between functional game component and commemorative art. The release was met with significant interest from the Magic community, specifically those focused on the high-end secondary market and the aesthetic curation of gameplay decks.
