Where it came from
Xenograft was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia expansion, the final set in the Scars of Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set depicted the complete conquest of the plane of Mirrodin by the Phyrexians, a race of biomechanical horrors obsessed with perfection through forced biological integration. The card reflects this thematic shift, representing the faction's efforts to forcibly alter and assimilate the remaining life forms of the plane.
The card was illustrated by Jason Chan, who captured the grotesque, surgical aesthetic of the Phyrexian regime.
