Where it came from
Serialized in Morning beginning in 2016, 1122: Go-dai Fuufu no Baai was created by manga artist Peko Watanabe. The series explores the complexities of modern marriage, focusing on a couple who adopt a mutual agreement to have an extramarital affair, a practice they term 'Friday partner.' Watanabe’s work is noted for its delicate, nuanced observation of emotional intimacy and the societal expectations placed upon committed partnerships.
The manga is characterized by a restrained, contemplative visual style that mirrors the quiet tension of its narrative. By examining the vulnerabilities and shifting boundaries within the lead couple's relationship, Watanabe provides a thoughtful critique of conventional domestic structures. The series gained significant critical attention for its maturity and realism, eventually being adapted into a live-action streaming series, which further solidified its standing as a prominent study of contemporary Japanese relationships.
