1999 Shanghai

Released in the late 1990s, 1999 Shanghai represents a notable early work by Mizushiro Setona, a mangaka widely celebrated for her sophisticated exploration of complex interpersonal dynamics and emotional vulnerability. This volume reflects the stylistic trends of the era's shōjo manga scene, characterized by delicate linework and a focus on the atmospheric tension between protagonists. It serves as a formative example of the author's ability to weave intricate, often melancholic narratives that resonate with readers seeking depth beyond standard genre tropes.

The design and artistic direction of the volume lean into the aesthetic conventions of the late 90s, utilizing expressive character studies to underscore the internal struggles of the cast. Upon its release, the work was received as a promising addition to Setona's growing body of work, helping to establish the thematic preoccupations—such as longing, identity, and the volatility of youth—that would define her later, more internationally recognized projects. It remains a sought-after piece for collectors of 90s manga who appreciate the transitionary period of the medium's development.
