Where it came from
4-punkan no Marigold was serialized by the manga artist Kirie in Shogakukan's Monthly Spirits magazine beginning in 2017. The story follows a paramedic named Mikoto Hanamaki who possesses the unique, melancholic ability to see the remaining lifespan of those he touches, leading him to foresee the death of his stepsister, whom he secretly loves. The work is characterized by its poignant, atmospheric exploration of fate, mortality, and the complexities of familial bonds.
The series was designed to evoke a sense of quiet emotional resonance, balancing the supernatural premise with grounded, human-centric drama. Kirie’s art style, known for soft linework and emotive character expressions, was instrumental in conveying the story's bittersweet tone. Upon its publication, the manga was well-received for its empathetic writing and was subsequently adapted into a live-action Japanese television drama in 2019, which helped broaden the reach of the original source material.
