A Desperate Character: And Other Stories

A Desperate Character and Other Stories is a collection of short fiction by the Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev, originally published in its full form toward the end of the author's career. These stories reflect Turgenev's mature style, characterized by a melancholic realism and a keen psychological insight into the human condition. The collection serves as a quintessential example of late 19th-century Russian literature, capturing the complex social tensions and existential questions that occupied the Russian intelligentsia during this period.

The stories within this volume are noted for Turgenev's graceful prose and his ability to construct profound narratives within a concise framework. While Turgenev was already an internationally acclaimed figure by the time these works were compiled, the collection is often studied for how it explores themes of fatalism and the quiet struggles of individuals against broader societal currents. It remains a significant entry in his body of work, representing the refined aesthetic sensibility he developed while living in Western Europe.
