A Dictionary of Music and Musicians: (A.D. 1450-1880)

A Dictionary of Music and Musicians was first published in four volumes between 1878 and 1889 under the editorship of Sir George Grove. Conceived as a comprehensive resource for the non-professional reader, the project aimed to provide accessible yet scholarly information on musical history, theory, and instruments. Grove, a civil engineer by trade who turned to musicology, sought to create a standard reference that bridge the gap between dry academic encyclopedias and casual musical literature.

The design and content were heavily influenced by Grove’s own wide-ranging interests, including a particular dedication to the works of Beethoven and Schubert. He commissioned contributions from leading experts of the era, resulting in a work that significantly shaped Victorian musical scholarship. Upon its release, the dictionary was widely received as an essential reference tool, eventually undergoing numerous editions and expansions throughout the twentieth century to reflect evolving musicological standards.
