Where it came from
A egreja e o estado, authored by Joaquim Saldanha Marinho, emerged during a period of intense ideological friction in 19th-century Brazil. Published in the late 1800s, the work reflects the author's deep involvement in the liberal and republican intellectual circles of the time. Marinho was a prominent figure who utilized his writing to advocate for the separation of religious institutions from the governance of the state, challenging the established influence of the Catholic Church in civil affairs.
The text is significant for its contributions to the secularist discourse that would eventually influence the transition toward a republican government in Brazil. Designed as a polemical and analytical discourse, the work prioritizes clear argumentation and legalistic reasoning to support the author's political vision. It was received as a seminal piece of anti-clerical literature, documenting the tensions between traditional power structures and the emerging secular ideals of the modern Brazilian state.
