A Genealogy of the Leavenworth Family in the United States, with Historical Introduction, Etc., by E. W. L. ... Being a Revision and Extension of the Genealogical Tree Compiled by W. and E. W. Leavenworth, Etc

Published in 1873, this comprehensive volume was compiled by Elias Warner Leavenworth, a prominent Syracuse lawyer and politician who served as the Secretary of State of New York. The work represented a decade of intensive research aimed at documenting the descendants of Thomas Leavenworth, who had emigrated to Connecticut in the mid-17th century. It stands as a notable example of the post-Civil War era's burgeoning interest in American genealogy, a period defined by families seeking to formalize their heritage and record the dispersal of colonial lineages across the expanding nation.

The design of the book adheres to the rigorous, data-heavy conventions of 19th-century genealogical record-keeping, prioritizing clarity and archival integrity. Elias Warner Leavenworth structured the volume to build upon an earlier, smaller genealogical chart created by his relatives, William and Elias Leavenworth. By integrating extensive historical introductions and systematic biographical sketches, the author created a lasting reference tool that was well-regarded among historical societies for its depth and methodical organization, ultimately serving as a foundational text for later genealogical studies of the Leavenworth family.
