A Guide Book of United States Coins: The Official Red Book

First published in 1946, The Official Red Book was authored by Richard S. Yeoman to serve as a comprehensive, standardized reference for United States coin collectors. At a time when numismatics was shifting toward a more organized hobby, Yeoman sought to provide a reliable source for valuations and historical data. His intention was to create a portable, authoritative manual that could bridge the gap between casual enthusiasts and professional dealers by establishing consistent pricing trends and technical specifications.

The book’s design is noted for its accessible format, featuring clear illustrations and descriptive entries for coin series ranging from colonial issues to modern commemoratives. Under the long-standing editorship established by Yeoman and continued by successors like Kenneth Bressett, the volume became a staple of the industry. It is widely considered the definitive authority on coin market trends, and its annual updates reflect the evolving landscape of American numismatic history and collector demand.
