A Register of the Presidents, Fellows, Demies, Instructors in Grammar and in Music, Chaplains, Clerks, Choristers, and Other Members of Saint Mary Magdalen College in the University of Oxford, from the Foundation of the College to the Present Time: The demies. v. 1-4; 1482-1857

This multivolume register was compiled by John Rouse Bloxam, a fellow and historian of Magdalen College, Oxford. Published in the mid-19th century, the work was a monumental labor of archival research aimed at preserving the biographical history of every individual who held a position at the college since its founding by William of Waynflete in 1448. The project was conceived as an exhaustive scholarly reference to document the academic and ecclesiastical lineage of the institution.

Bloxam’s approach to the register was highly methodical, drawing upon the college’s internal statutes, ledgers, and institutional archives to trace the lives of demies, fellows, and other collegiate members. While the work serves as a foundational text for Magdalen’s history, it was received primarily as a specialized academic resource for historians of the University of Oxford and genealogy enthusiasts. The meticulous nature of the documentation highlights the 19th-century passion for institutional record-keeping and the preservation of academic identity.
