A Romany of the Snows: Second Series of an Adventurer of the North; Being a Continuation of Pierre and His People and the Latest Existing Records of P

A Romany of the Snows was published in 1896 by Sir Gilbert Parker, a Canadian-born novelist who achieved significant fame in the late Victorian era for his tales of the rugged Canadian frontier. As the second series following his popular collection Pierre and His People, this work continues the exploration of the lives of the French-Canadian trappers, traders, and the indigenous populations of the Northwest territories. Parker intended these stories to capture the mythos of the North, emphasizing the collision between wild, untamed landscapes and the encroaching influence of modern society.

The volume reflects the romanticized literary style prevalent at the turn of the century, where the harsh realities of the Canadian wilderness were often softened by sentimental narratives and stylized regional dialects. Parker, who was also a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom, held a keen interest in Imperial themes, and his work was widely read as part of the broader effort to define a distinct Canadian identity within the British Empire. Contemporary critics frequently lauded his vivid descriptions of northern life, which contributed to his status as a best-selling author during the 1890s.
