Where it came from
A Zombie Friend of Mine is a digital-first webcomic series created by the artist known as 碱碱呀_ (Jianjianya). The work gained prominence on Chinese social media platforms and digital comic aggregators as part of a wave of short-form, slice-of-life storytelling that explores unconventional companionship. Its creation reflects a contemporary shift toward character-driven narratives that blend elements of horror aesthetics with gentle, humorous, and heartwarming domestic scenarios.
The series design is defined by a clean, approachable art style that leans into the contrast between the macabre nature of its protagonist and the mundane, cozy realities of their daily interactions. By focusing on the quiet camaraderie between the characters, the mangaka aimed to deconstruct traditional tropes of the zombie genre, prioritizing emotional resonance over suspense. It has been well-received by online readers for its whimsical tone and the expressive, minimalist character illustrations that anchor each brief installment.
