Aa! Megami-sama!

Aa! Megami-sama!, known in English as Oh My Goddess!, debuted in 1988 in the Japanese seinen manga magazine Afternoon. Created by mangaka Kosuke Fujishima, the series emerged during a period of rising interest in genre-blending manga that combined domestic comedy with mythological fantasy. The narrative centers on Keiichi Morisato, an ordinary college student whose life changes when he inadvertently summons a goddess named Belldandy, leading to a premise that balances whimsical romantic complications with gentle, philosophical musings on human nature.

Fujishima’s artistic style is widely recognized for its intricate linework, particularly in his detailed depictions of mechanical elements and ethereal character designs. The series was designed to evoke a sense of warmth and optimism, distancing itself from the darker trends prevalent in much of the late-80s seinen market. Upon its release, the manga was well-received for its clean aesthetic and consistent world-building, eventually becoming a cornerstone of the slice-of-life fantasy genre and spanning decades of publication before concluding in 2014.
