Aka-chan to Boku

Aka-chan to Boku, known internationally as Baby and Me, was serialized in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine between 1991 and 1997. Created by mangaka Ragawa Marimo, the series emerged during a period when slice-of-life shōjo manga was increasingly exploring domestic themes and the complexities of familial relationships. The story follows Takuya Enoki, a fifth-grade boy who is forced to grow up quickly after the sudden death of his mother, taking on the responsibility of raising his infant brother, Minoru, alongside his grieving father.

Ragawa Marimo’s design approach focused on a delicate, expressive art style that captured both the mundane struggles of parenting and the emotional weight of childhood bereavement. The series was widely praised for its grounded portrayal of sibling dynamics and became a significant commercial success, eventually winning the 42nd Shogakukan Manga Award in 1997.
