Akane-banashi

Akane-banashi is a manga series written by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in early 2022. The narrative centers on Akane Osaki, a young woman who aspires to become a master of rakugo, a traditional form of Japanese verbal storytelling, following the professional downfall of her father. By centering a shonen-style sports manga structure around a sedentary, monologue-driven art form, the creators sought to revitalize interest in the dying craft of rakugo for a modern, younger audience.

The series has been widely praised for its kinetic visual language, which effectively captures the intensity and psychological depth of performance art through the medium of ink and paper. Critics have highlighted Moue’s dynamic character expressions and Suenaga’s meticulous research into the rakugo canon as key reasons for its success. Since its inception, the title has received significant critical acclaim, including nominations for prestigious industry awards like the Manga Taisho, solidifying its position as a standout work in contemporary shonen manga.
