Aku no Hana

Aku no Hana, or The Flowers of Evil, was serialized in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine beginning in 2009. Written and illustrated by Shuzo Oshimi, the work emerged as a psychological drama that deconstructs the coming-of-age genre, exploring themes of adolescent alienation, obsession, and the contrast between societal expectations and internal desires. Its narrative, heavily inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s poetry collection of the same name, intentionally avoids romanticizing youth, opting instead to portray a raw, uncomfortable, and often bleak vision of middle school dynamics.
