Allgemeine Geschichte der Literatur ein Handbuch in zwei Bänden von Johannes Scherr

Johannes Scherr’s Allgemeine Geschichte der Literatur was first published in the mid-19th century as a comprehensive effort to synthesize world literary history for the German-speaking public. Written during a period of burgeoning interest in cultural history and encyclopedic learning, the two-volume set sought to provide a structured overview of literary development from antiquity to the modern era, reflecting the academic rigor and didactic tone characteristic of German intellectual life at the time.

The design of the volumes adheres to the traditional aesthetic of 19th-century educational publishing, emphasizing durability and clarity for scholarly consultation. Scherr, a historian and literary critic known for his assertive and sometimes polemical style, aimed to create a narrative that was both informative and stylistically engaging. Upon its release, the work was received as a significant contribution to literary historiography, serving as a standard reference for students and educated readers who sought to navigate the vast landscape of global literature within a single framework.
