Where it came from
The Almanak do Ministério da Guerra was a recurring official publication issued by the Brazilian Ministry of War throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These volumes served as essential administrative registers, providing detailed rosters of military personnel, hierarchical structures, and departmental organization. By documenting the status and deployment of officers, the publication functioned as a primary reference tool for the governance and transparency of the Brazilian armed forces during a period of significant national political transition.
The design of the almanacs prioritized utility and bureaucratic clarity, featuring dense tabular data and comprehensive indexing to aid civil and military administrators. The production was overseen by official ministry presses, adhering to a formal aesthetic consistent with governmental archives of the era. While primarily utilitarian, these records are now valued by historians as vital primary sources for genealogical research and for understanding the institutional influence of the military within the context of the Brazilian Empire and the early Republic.
